How Much Browning Earned On His Gun?

At the end of the XIX century John Moses Browning developed and patented almost all automation schemes which have been the basis for most self-loading pistols up to this time.

That time young John was helping his father in the workroom – he was a gunsmith. In 1878 John developed his first gun – a self-loading rifle and one year later he got his first patent of his invention. Winchester Repeating Arms Company purchased the copyright for $8000 – huge money for that time.

In 10 years Winchester Model was the most popular system in the world. Later Browning was selling his mechanism under Remington, Savage and other brands.

Browning pistols, mass-produced since the beginning of the 20th century, largely due to their portability, gained great popularity in the world, and became a model for copying and imitation, in fact determined the appearance of most of the subsequent designs of automatic pistols.

Every company in the world purchased the patent on Browning`s construction. Every company paid good price for copyright.

So the idea is – at the beginning of the 20th century, the famous gunsmith realized how valuable his invention was, and registered the copyright. Despite of the fact that at first no one believed that John’s invention would be so popular.

Сan you imagine how much money he had made and what a mistake he would have done if he hadn’t registered the copyright?
